NOAA Lists Pacific Smelt as Threatened

On March 16, 2010, NOAA Fisheries listed Pacific smelt as threatened under the Endagered Species Act for the distinct population segment extending from the Mad River north. Pacific smelt, known offcially as eulachon, are small ocean-going fish that historically ranged from northern California to the Bering Sea in Alaska. They return to rivers to spawn in late winter and early spring.

Carmel River's San Clemente Dam One Step Closer to Removal

Officials pledge to remove the San Clemente Dam to eliminate a threat to the lives and property of those along Carmel River, and to help restore watershed for federally protected steelhead trout. The proposed method for removing the dam involves rerouting the Carmel River to bypass the 2.5 million cubic yards of silt that have accumulated behind it.

Klamath Settlement Agreements Finalized

Years after negotiations, the final Klamath Basin Restoration Agreement was released complementing the Klamath Hydroelectric Settlement Agreement which calls for removal of four Klamath River dams. Together, the two agreements present a broad blueprint for restoring one of America’s greatest river systems in a manner that provides greater economic security for local fishing, tribal and agricultural communities.

Clearinghouse for Dam Removal Information (CDRI) announces a new and improved website where almost 1,000 documents on proposed and completed dam removal projects across the country can be viewed and accessed. CDRI is an online repository for documents from government agencies, consulting firms, universities, and nonprofit organizations so that those making decisions about dam removal can access all the information in one place.
